Full-Day Kindergarten
Geckos: 8:30am-2:30pm
Mrs. Sanders, Mrs. Walrath and Mrs. Curnalia
Our Kindergarten class is celebrating its seventh year as a ministry of the Tanque Verde Lutheran Church. We are a full day program and our class meets from 8:30 – 2:30 Monday through Friday. Three qualified teachers work together to provide a program individualized to meet the needs of each child. There is a maximum of 18 students in the class. Our goal is to develop in each child a positive self image and a love of learning in a safe, nurturing, and faith based environment.
Mrs. Sanders, Mrs. Walrath and Mrs. Curnalia are creative, dedicated and experienced teachers who love working with children. Mrs. Sanders has taught at our Kindergarten for 4 years. Mrs. Walrath and Mrs. Curnalia have both blessed our program for 5 years each. They work hard to prepare each child with the skills they require to move on to 1st grade.
The Kindergarten Curriculum Includes:
Language Arts: reading, writing, literature and phonics. We use journals and make individual books. Letter sounds are taught through the use of the Jolly Phonics program.
Math: numbers, time, patterning, counting and sequencing activities. Our math includes a combination of Saxon Math and Touch Math.
Science: ecology, water conservation, rocks and fossils, plants and animals.
Health/P.E., AM gym and PM playground time
The Arts: music, drama and art.
Social Studies: Arizona, United States and the world around us.
Christian Studies: includes Bible stories, Chapel and weekly Scripture verse.
A Gathering Time where the children ‘sketch' in their sketching pad. Creating a songbook to take home at the end of the year.
Field Trips to: Sabino Canyon, The Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum, The Children's Museum, community businesses and singing at Church activities.
Using the D'Nealian (Modern Manuscript) method of writing.
Following State of Arizona guidelines for our curriculum.
Hot lunches will be available on Wednesday, from the Church caterers, and on Friday, from Pizza Hut. The charge for these lunches is nominal and includes milk and fruit or a vegetable.
Every year we are asked, "What can I do to help my child be ready for school?" READ! READ! READ! Also, help them learn to tie their shoes, and memorize their phone number and address. Let them be creative with different materials –scissors, glue, crayons, chalk, etc. – and help them write about it when they want to.
